An Air Source Heat Pump uses age old thermodynamics to transform the heat contained within the ambient air right down to -5 degrees, into usable heat energy that can be used to provide hot water heating in homes and domestic properties. This system is known as an air to water heat pump.

The Activair air to water heat pump is rapidly becoming one of the most popular choices for heating in the UK, this is because of spiralling fuel prices and the high COP of these units. An air to water heat pump works by attaching to the hot water system for the home, be this a new under floor heating coil or the existing hot water system. Water is pumped around this system passing through the air to water heater which has a heat exchange plate inside. This heat exchanger plate is warmed up by the refrigeration cycle, extracting warmth out of the air and blowing cold air out the front of the unit to give you warm water around the house and only using a third of the energy it is putting into your home.
An air to water heat pump is the perfect form of heating to use with under floor heating. The temperature for under floor heating needs to be around 35 degrees to reach optimum performance. The best COP figures will be obtained from an air source heat pump at this temperature. Whereas with a standard boiler running an under floor heating system, a mixer valve will need to be incorporated into the system to bring the temperature down from 70 degrees to the desired 35, a very wasteful system as you are cooling down the water you put so much energy into heating up.
